Why there is no reset button here

If you have been searching for how to reset or repair your metabolism, you have probably found a lot of confident advice. Here is what I found when I went looking for the evidence behind it.

The term has no medical meaning. There is no clinical definition, no diagnostic criteria, and no agreed way to measure it. Search for it and you get coaching pages, with at least four different meanings between them. That is not a sign of a contested idea, it is a sign of a marketing term.

The most popular protocol has no controlled trial behind it. Reverse dieting, the slow weekly calorie increase, has never been tested in a published full-length human trial. The only randomized data is a small conference abstract that found nothing, and trended slightly against it. The paper that popularized the idea said research was needed to evaluate whether it works. That was over a decade ago and it is still true.

What does have evidence is much more boring. Eating at maintenance for a while has twelve randomized trials behind it. What they show is not faster fat loss and not a repaired metabolism. They show lower hunger, less irritability, and people finding it easier to keep going. That is a real benefit and worth having. It is just not the one being sold.

And the thing being fixed is smaller than advertised. Your metabolism does adapt when you diet, by roughly 50 to 200 calories a day at rest. It slows weight loss down. It does not stop it, and participants in the most extreme study of this kept losing weight down to very low body fat despite it.

So I will not sell you a reset. Not because I think you do not need help, but because I would have to make it up.
